Shocker: How Jonathan Bribed Pastors With N7bn- Director Christian Movt

More facts appear to be emerging on the allegation by Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, that President Goodluck Jonathan gave pastors across the country N6bn to vote against the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in the presidential election.
A Borno-based Pastor, Kallamu Musa-Dikwa, said on Thursday that the money that was given to pastors by the President was actually N7bn and not N6bn as alleged by Amaechi, who doubles as the Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation.
Amaechi had alleged that unnamed leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party paid N6bn to Christian clerics to campaign against Buhari and the APC.
The governor’s allegation caused a stir among the Christian clerics, with the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria and the Northern State Christian Elders Forum asking Amaechi to name the church leaders, who collected the huge bribe.
But Musa-Dikwa, who is the Executive Director of the Voice of Northern Christian Movement, told journalists in Kaduna on Thursday that the said money was channelled through the Christian Association of Nigeria.
He said the CAN got the said money (N7bn) on January 26, 2015 and disbursed N3m to each State Chairmen of the CAN across the country.
Musa-Dikwa, who was an Associate Pastor with the E. Y. N. Church, Farm Centre, Dikwa Road, Maiduguri, Borno State, under Rev. Emmanuel Kwajihe between 2002 and 2004, said the CAN had started threatening Christians in the state (Borno) that they must re-elect Jonathan in the rescheduled election.
He said, “It was N7bn that was given to the CAN leadership by President Goodluck Jonathan. They (CAN) later disbursed N3m to the State Chairmen of the CAN.
“The money was handed over to the CAN Leadership on 26th January, 2015.”
“Actually, President Jonathan is using CAN President, and it was the CAN President who collected the monies and shared N3m to the CAN executives in each state.
“And some Pentecostal Bishops also collected their share. Actually, the money is not N6bn, it is N7bn. This is what I know. One of the CAN officials from Abuja told me that they have collected the money. The corruption in CAN is terrible. They are corrupting the body of Christ because of money.
“They are now threatening Christians in Borno State that they will deal with anybody, who refuses to vote for Jonathan. And the CAN officials are now campaigning that if Buhari emerges President, he will Islamise Nigeria; and that Osinbajo collected monies from Islamic world; and that the same Osinbajo will resign soon after Buhari wins to give way for Tinubu to emerge Vice President.”
Musa-Dikwa named some high-profile clerics, who had benefitted from the controversial largesse to actualise the re-election bid of Jonathan.

Investigation: David Mark's Wife, Others Operate Highly Profiled Secret Swiss Accounts- SwissLeaks

By Premium Times
Some of Nigeria’s wealthiest industrialists, former government officials and their relatives, were amongst thousands of individuals around the world who operated highly secretive foreign accounts with the Swiss branch of banking giant, HSBC, concealing their identities for years and using codes perhaps to shake off tax authorities from accounts, some of which held illicit assets from criminals, traffickers, arms dealers and other outlaws, secret files published last week by a consortium of journalists around the world have shown.
The trove, released by the French Daily, Le Monde and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, in partnership with PREMIUM TIMES, and a host of other major media organisations around the world, showed how HSBC profited doing business with people who stole from their countries and some of the world’s most notorious con artists, including people who made a fortune fuelling wars in Africa.
PREMIUM TIMES is the only Nigerian publication involved in the investigation, which lasted several months.
The bank helped questionable characters conceal their wealth despite knowing their sources, and devised ways to hide the identities of the owners of the secret accounts from governments around the world.
At least 100,000 secret bank account operators who owned about $100 billion were exposed in the leaks, unsettling investigators in several countries.
A Roll-call of Nigerian Clients
French authorities have so far linked 201 individual and corporate HSBC clients with Nigeria – either nationals or having business interests in the oil-rich West African country. However the sorting procedure might be faulty and some of those listed may end up having nothing to do with Nigeria.
Top on the list of Nigerians whose names appeared on the file is Africa’s richest industrialist, Aliko Dangote.
Another Nigerian businessman and owner of mobile telecom company, Globacom, Mike Adenuga, also appears on the files.
Vikky Preye Mark, estranged wife of Nigeria’s Senate President, David Mark, was also listed.
Many of the accounts date back to the 1990s and up to 2005/2006, when the data were stolen by a former staff of HSBC, Hervé Falcian.
According to details pieced together by the ICIJ, HSBC fashioned a series of layers of privacy schemes to ensure the worst of criminals and characters were protected.
The methods used were simple but had complex implications.
First, the account owner opened an account in his or her name, and the bank, in connivance with the customer, replaced the account holder’s name with a number code then given to the client. At times, the clients were encouraged to incorporate offshore shell companies in notorious tax havens, which then indirectly hold the accounts on behalf of the real beneficial owners.
The bank repeatedly reassured clients it would not disclose details of the accounts to national authorities, even if evidence suggested that the accounts were undeclared to tax authorities in the client’s home country.
The code meant the client would no longer be tied to the account with his name, but in all transactions with the bank, he or she will be identified with the number.
But correspondences from the bank would be sent to the holder’s personal address. There was also an option for customers to ask the bank to withhold their mails. That practice was later discontinued.
The account holders were given the option of being contacted directly, or through proxies.
To access the account, there were options too. A client could do so from his home, whereby he will need to declare the account to tax authorities; or travel there in person, or do so through a courier who flies to Switzerland to collect cash from time to time.
Ultimately, the bank ensured the account details were kept secret and separate from the personal details of the holder.
That entire process allowed the bank’s clients hide from tax authorities and governments around the world, while criminals could hide stolen wealth.
Not all holders of the HSBC private accounts are however criminals, but there are concerns regarding why they chose a banking platform with emphasis on secrecy and concealed.
Very little of Mr. Dangote’s transactions with the bank were made available.
As head of a conglomerate operating in 16 African countries, including Nigeria, Mr. Dangote made his fortune producing salt, sugar, flour, cement and noodles. He has also expanded to real estate and oil.
Mr. Dangote is the president of the Nigerian Stock Exchange.
In November 2014, Forbes magazine ranked him the richest man in Africa and the 23rd in the world with an estimated fortune of $21.6 billion.
The mogul became an HSBC private account client in July 2003. The account appeared in the name of Development Projects Corporation, its registration address in Tortola the British Virgin Islands, a notorious tax haven, where individuals and corporations usually incorporate shell companies to hide assets. Mr. Dangote’s account was in operation till August 2004.
It is not clear to what use Mr. Dangote put the account and perhaps because he closed it long before the data were stolen, bank records did not indicate any balance on the account.
Globacom’s owner, Mr. Adenuga, had an account in his name tied to Sunbow Express Limited, a company based in Panama and for which HSBC described him as beneficial owner. The leaked file gave the company’s postal address as 86 West Green Road, GB-London N15 and c/o Arosemena Noriega-Contreras, Calle Elvira Mendez Street, 10 ED. DEL Barco Do Brasil P-Panama City, Panama.
Mr. Adenuga’s own address was given in bank documents as 37 York Terrace East GB-London NW1.
The businessman, who is among Africa’s richest personalities, opened the account on February 2, 1997 and it had a balance of $115, 405.00 as of 2006/2007 when the data were stolen.
Mr. Adenuga did not respond to ICIJ’s repeated requests for comment.
Mrs. Mark also operated an account with the bank but with details made largely secret. Although she was known within the bank as the beneficial owner of the account, she was largely identified with a secret code – 14312MP.
Mrs. Mark opened the account on December 18, 1989 and closed it July 12, 1991. About that time, her husband, then a top ranking army officer, had served as military administrator of Niger State and federal minister of communications, a period during which he is believed to have made a fortune.
He has been a senator since 1999 and President of the Nigerian Senate since 2007. Court papers during a messy divorce with his wife suggested that some of his children schooled in Switzerland, but it is not clear whether it was during that period that Mrs. Mark operated the HSBC account.
The court papers also showed that the Marks operated foreign accounts elsewhere. About six million pounds in four accounts – three at the Northern Bank, Isle of Man, and one at the Allied Irish Bank, Jersey – were frozen in October 2000 as a result of the ancillary relief sought by Victoria Mark in the couple’s divorce case. Mr. Mark’s operation of those accounts while a Senator is a violation of Nigerian law which bars public officials from operating foreign accounts while in office.
Nigeria’s former defence minister, Theophilus Danjuma, was also linked to HSBC account 15731CD, which was opened in 1993 and closed in 2001. The documents did not provide details regarding the balances in the account and the use to which Mr. Danjuma put it.
Mr. Danjuma has emerged one of Nigeria’s richest former public office holders through ownership of one of Nigeria’s most lucrative oil blocs and a lucrative shipping firm.
Another notable name on the leaked file is Adamu Wakili, Nigeria’s former Ambassador to the United States. Mr. Wakili was linked to account 17404B01, opened in 1991 and closed two years later. Mr. Wakili served as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development as well as that of Environment,
The list also has Aminu Jibril, former Senator, Minister and Ambassador. Mr. Jibril’s account has no details beyond his address, listed as Yola, former Gongola State.
Deribe Alhaji Mai, who also operates one of Nigeria’s richest oil blocs, was listed in the leaks. His details were not provided.
Peter Igbinedion Osawaru, was also named in the leaked file as the Director at Okada Air with an account code of 15418MP, opened in 1991 and closed in 1995.
Ibrahim Dasuki, a former Sultan of Sokoto who was deposed in 1996, was linked to account 15372HTNL, opened in 1991 and closed in 1993. The account coincided with when he was Sultan.
Another prominent Nigerian listed on the file as an HSBC client is Inuwa Wushishi, a retired General, former chief of army staff between 1981 and 1983 and former Board Chairman of UAC of Nigeria. Mr. Wushishi, 75, and his wife, Aishatu, were identified as beneficial owners of an account with code 6808AW. The couples opened the account on December 18, 1989 and closed it July 12, 1991. It remains unclear to what use they put the account.
Also on the list is Mohammed Hayatudeen, a former CEO of FSB International Bank and immediate past Chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group – Nigeria leading economic think tank. Mr. Hayatudeen and his wife, Hafsatu, are listed beneficial owners of an account with secret code 15409MZH, opened on June 15, 1992 and closed on September 3, 1996. Apparently the entire balance in the account was cleared long before the leaked HSBC data was stolen.
There are lots of other Nigerian businesspersons listed in the file. They include Victor Ifeanyi Odili and his wife Ifeyinwa, who had a balance of $18,518.57 in their account as at 2005/2006 when the data was stolen; a Lagos-based merchant, Abdallah Taofik, who had a balance of $3,480,942.94; Akindele Labode Oladimeji ($23,979,105.76); Nankani Jairaj ($1,131,097.72) among others. (PREMIUM TIMES will release the full list of Nigerian clients in the days ahead.)
Files Sheds More Light on Nigeria’s Halliburton Bribery
The leaked file also opened a new window in the Halliburton bribery scandal involving Nigeria’s former leaders and the bribery surrounding the award of contracts for Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas plant.
The files reveal that Jefrey Tesler, the UK lawyer, who used a network of secretive banks and offshore tax havens to funnel $182 million in bribes to top Nigerian officials in exchange for a $6 billion contract to build Nigeria’s LNG, had financial ties to two former Nigerian officials: now-retired Major General Chris Garuba, chief of staff to former Nigerian president Abdulsalami Abubakar who himself allegedly received bribes as president; and Andrew Agom, a senior government official who was killed in an attack on a motorcade.
Records show bank staff responding to a request from Mr. Agom’s widow to unfreeze her husband’s account, whose post was sent to Tesler’s North London law firm and which was marked as subject to criminal investigations into Mr. Tesler. The files do not indicate whether or not the account was ultimately unfrozen.
Mr. Garuba, a former governor of Northeastern Bauchi state, is now chairman of Obekpa Petroleum, a Nigerian oil company. Before his death, Mr. Agom was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, which which was in power for most of the period the bribery scheme unfolded.
Mr. Agom was the beneficial owner of an HSBC account linked to a Gibraltar-based company, Hemisphere Services Limited, which held a maximum amount of $797,377 at one point in 2006 or 2007. Africa Confidential magazine previously named a company named Hemisphere Services (Nigeria) as a “recipient of largesse” from Tesler after viewing documents disclosed to the magazine during a French corruption investigation.
Mr. Agom’s account was opened in 1991, on the same day that an account was opened in the name of former Nigerian Air Force Chief, Abdullahi Dominic Bello. A Nigerian government investigator has previously described Swiss accounts held by Mr. Bello as a conduit for “slush funds”. The investigator did not specifically mention HSBC.
A spokesman for Mr. Bello told ICIJ that the account, which was used for business purposes and opened by Mr. Tesler when he was Bello’s lawyer, had never been used for slush funds or bribes. “At no point has Mr. Bello been charged to any court over the bribery scandal,” said the spokesman, adding that, “it must be a coincidence that Mr. Agom and [Mr. Bello’s company] opened an account the same day.”
The leaked HSBC files identify Chris Garuba and his wife Rita as HSBC clients; their names are listed along with Tesler’s in an account named Bridlington Enterprises Limited, for which Mr. Tesler acted as an attorney. The files show that the account was opened the year before Mr. Tesler sent his first bribe payment to Switzerland, although the files do not show that Tesler transferred money into the Bridlington account, which held as much as $367,547 in 2006 or 2007.
The principal beneficial owner of that account is a certain Abu Shuaibu, a 65-year-old who effectively ran the account, repeatedly visiting HSBC in Switzerland, and making several withdrawals in cash. On one occasion – on November 11, 2005 – he visited the bank to request a transfer of 600,000 U.S. dollars. It is not clear to whom the money was sent.
PREMIUM TIMES and ICIJ have not been able to determine Mr. Shuaibu’s real identity. Chris and Rita Garuba, who should know, did not respond to repeated requests for comment.
HSBC Apologises
Headquartered in London, HSBC has offices in 74 nations and territories on six continents.
The leaked account records show some clients making trips to Geneva to withdraw large wads of cash, sometimes in used notes. The files also document huge sums of money controlled by dealers in diamonds who are known to have operated in war zones and sold gemstones to finance insurgencies that caused untold deaths.
On Sunday, HSBC published a full-page advert containing an apology in several newspapers, over claims that its Swiss private bank helped clients evade tax.
The advert reproduced an open letter signed by chief executive Stuart Gulliver, which said recent coverage by the media had been “a painful experience”.
Mr. Gulliver, whose letter was addressed to the bank’s customers and staff, said in his letter that he wanted to reassure customers that its Swiss private bank had been “completely overhauled”.
“We have absolutely no appetite to do business with clients who are evading their taxes or who fail to meet our financial crime compliance standards,” he was quoted by the BBC as saying.
“The media focus has been on historical events that show the standards to which we operate today were not universally in place in our Swiss operations eight years ago.
“We must show we understand that the societies we serve expect more from us. We therefore offer our sincerest apologies.”
Mr. Gulliver also said that the recent media coverage about its clients and past misdeeds must be put “into context”.
“A former employee of the Swiss private bank stole data more than eight years ago.
“Major UK media outlets have focused on approximately 140 names included in the stolen data.
“Many of the people mentioned have been named simply because they are well-known individuals. The vast majority of these 140 people are no longer clients.
“The media has been mentioning a number of 100,000 clients. At its peak, the Swiss private bank had about 30,000 accounts.
“We have absolutely no appetite to do business with clients who are evading their taxes or who fail to meet our financial crime compliance standards.”

A Must Read: Buhari in the Public Eye

By Mr. Michael Ovienmhada
NOT since the days of Awo and the Action UPN has Nigeria witnessed the level of enthusiasm that we see these days when Buhari shows up for a campaign rally. I was at the Lagos rally of the APC at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
What I saw and experienced was nothing short of euphoria and a revolution in the making. How do a people turn around full-cycle from a man they embraced in 2011, when he told the nation ——I had no shoes——to a man who up until now had been tagged unelectable? Let me attempt to explain it
In 2011, Nigeria was looking for a breath of fresh air. We had just emerged from the dark days and intrigues of the cabal surrounding late President Umaru Yar’ Adua.
The nation was disgusted that a small group of people could attempt to hold the nation to ransom and they took a good look at his deputy. The man had his bag packed ready to go home if things did not work out in his favour. He did not lift a finger to attempt to grab power. It was his constitutional right but he was not going to go to war over that. His self effacing attitude and humility endeared him to the nation. The National Assembly eventually rose up to the challenge of those dark days and declared the doctrine of Necessity.
Goodluck Jonathan became our President. Thus, the 2011 election was a foregone conclusion. Goodluck Jonathan, a minority from the tiny village of Otuoke won in a very impressive election adjudged by local and international observers as free and fair.
Until he did it, it was an inconceivable idea. Nigeria had been the playground of the Hausa-Fulani, the Ibos and the Yorubas, the three major tribes. The rest of us, minorities across the country had been condemned to collecting crumbs from the masters’ table. Jonathan’s victory could only be compared to Obama’s. African Americans constitute only 12% of the American population.
How could a black man ever think of becoming President of the United States of America? President Bush had run America to economic ruin. A recession had set in; unemployment had risen to 15% in some communities across the United States. The nation was involved in two major wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The result was young men and women coming back in body bags, severed limbs, and PTSD—Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
The American people were tired. Enters Obama——There is no Red America, there is no Blue America, there is the United States of America. Who is talking, the people asked?——He is a skinny African American fellow from Chicago. Who does he think he is to want to change America? The Tsunami was long gone.
The train had left the station. The horse had left the stable. Hillary Clinton was left gasping for air. For Hillary, she thought, the 2008 election was hers to be had. She underestimated the opposition. That was her undoing. Super Tuesday came and she had run out of steam. Young people across America of all colours had joined the Obama train—The mantra—Yes we Can rent the air not only in America but across the globe.
Ordinary folks and minority people across the world began to believe that their minoritiness was no longer a handicap. Joko Widodo came from the slums of Indonesia and upset the establishment. In India, Modi did the same. The gates became wide open for anyone who would dare.
It is from this prism that I want to look at what is happening in Nigeria. How did we get here? How did a man who had so much goodwill manage to use up all his capital?
Jonathan had so much emotional capital going for him. His account on emotional capital was full and overflowing. The people embraced him. The people loved him. The people were hopeful that a man who was just like them would understand and make life better for them. According to Daniel Goleman, (2002), Emotional Capital is the sum total of positive feeling that a leader has built up over time.
You can draw against it when you really need it. You build it through resonant leadership styles. Without emotional capital, you will find that when there is a crisis or an emergency, no one is standing behind the leader. People desert you when the chips are down but if you have built the capital by making deposits in it they will stand by you and go the extra mile.
How did he blow a hole in his Emotional Bank Account?
Stella Oduah was an issue. When the scandal blew open about the BMW purchases, the President had a chance to act swiftly. He lingered. I understand why he lingered because I understand where he comes from and the basic characteristics of his people. The Ijaws are fishermen by culture and orientation. They are patient people.
A fisherman goes out to sea and must wait and wait and wait. If you watch the President in interviews, you will find that he listens and listens and waits for the interviewer to talk. Even when they overdo it like Mo Abudu did in her chat with the President, he rarely gets angry.
If I were one of his handlers, I would have advised him to defuse the Stella Oduah situation immediately by advising her to resign to save the Presidency. I would have gone on to spin it as a victory for the FOI bill. If the President had not signed that Bill, what Stella did would never have become public knowledge.
In my opinion, many may disagree, Stella was one of the stars of the administration. She had done a phenomenal job. I can understand why Mr. President was reluctant to let her go.
At 73, Buhari is the least likely candidate that Nigerians need in 2015 but a nation in search of a moral compass it would appear, can look no further. Will Goodluck Jonathan use the next six weeks to build up his emotional bank account or will the APC blow the momentum? It is on this pinhead that the 2015 elections will turn.
Mr. Michael Ovienmhada, a public affairs analyst, wrote from Lagos.

LAGOS: Tension rises As Court reserves judgment on Obanikoro’s Political eligibility

A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has slated March 5, 2015, for judgment in a suit seeking to stop a former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, from ever contesting for any electoral office in Nigeria.
Among the allegations levelled against the ex-minister was that he had at one time or the other falsified his age and had submitted a forged birth certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission for the purpose of contesting governorship election in Lagos State.
Obanikoro’s accusers also asked the court to determine whether he was still eligible to contest any election in Nigeria having “voluntarily acquired the citizenship of the United States of America in addition to the citizenship of Nigeria.”
The action was instituted shortly before the Lagos Peoples Democracy Party’s primary which held on December 8, last year.
The three plaintiffs in the suit are members of the PDP, namely: Micheal Ogun, Suleiman Saheed and Wasiu Odusan.
Apart from their originating summons, they had also filed an ex parte application, wherein they urged Justice Kazeem Alogba to stop Obanikoro from standing for the PDP governorship primary in Lagos State.
The judge, however, declined to stop Obanikoro from participating in the said primary, wherein Mr. Jimi Agbaje was eventually declared winner.
The lawyer for the plaintiffs, Mr. Wahab Shittu, had vehemently argued that the matter was one that bordered on constitutional infringement.
He added that whatever judgment arrived at by the court would become an important reference point on the nation’s political landscape.
“A democracy is principally founded on the rule of law. At all times there are two choices to make, whether you want to be guided by the rule of law or by the culture of impunity. Your Lordship will decide this issue for history and for posterity,” Shittu said.
According to him, Obanikoro’s alleged misconduct were an affront on Section 182(1) (a) (j) of the 1999 Constitution and sections 31 (2), 50 (6) and (8) and 87 of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.
But in his objection, Obanikoro, through his counsel, Gbanga Ojo, described the suit as speculative and an abuse of court processes.
He urged Alogba to promptly dismiss the suit for failure to disclose any reasonable cause of action.
The thrust of Ojo’s contention was that all the documents tendered as exhibits before the court by Obanikoro’s accusers were either uncertified public documents or documents that were printed from the Internet, the authenticity of which could not be substantiated.
Besides, Ojo argued that the case had been overtaken by events and had thus become merely academic, since the PDP governorship primary had already been held and Obanikoro had stood for the election.
Wahab however asked the court not to look at the exhibits presented by the plaintiffs in isolation but to consider them in concert with the averrments in the plaintiffs’ affidavit.
Alogba fixed March 5, 2015 for judgment.

President Jonathan Sacks Controversial Social Media Aid, Reno Omokri, Appoints Asika As New Aid

President Goodluck Jonathan has retooled his social media team, sidelining his increasingly controversial point man, Reno Omokri by appointing Obi Asika as the new senior special assistant on social media. Mr. Jonathan move is seen as an apparent maneuver to re-energize his social media image following a growing slide in his electoral fortunes as well as a series of scandals involving Mr. Omokri, who until now shaped and ran the incumbent president’s campaign on social media. A source at the Presidency told SaharaReporters that Mr. Omokri, who returned from California to boost President Jonathan’s political campaigns in 2011, had become a huge liability and source of distraction. Mr. Omokri, who also doubles as a pastor, came to be known as “Wendell Simlin" after tech-savvy Nigerian social media activists caught him red-handed as he circulated reports on the Internet that claimed to have found a link between former Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, and Islamist terror group Boko Haram. Enterprising social media sleuths discovered that the so-called reports implicating Mr. Sanusi as a sponsor of Boko Haram were first created on and disseminated from Mr. Omokri's personal computer in Abuja. A few weeks ago, a California-based woman, Deborah Campbell, who was once married to a relative of Mr. Omokri’s, told SaharaReporters that the presidential aide had stolen her son's identity to engage in the circulation of fraudulent news that smeared Mr. Sanusi, who is now the Emir of Kano. Mr. Reno never denied the woman’s allegations. Last week, Mr. Omokri was accused of leading policemen to burglarize a house in Warri, Delta State that belonged to his late mother. The occupants of the house, including Alex Oyoro, a well known PDP political figure in Delta State, alleged that Mr. Omokri had led a group of thugs and mobile police officers who broke into the property and stole N25 million in cash. The money, according to Mr. Oyoro, was meant for Mr. Jonathan’s re-election campaign. Mr. Omokri denied being physically present at the scene of the burglary, claiming he was at his desk in Abuja and also doing some pastoral work at the time of the reported burglary. A source at the Presidency told SaharaReporters that, in an attempt to present a more humane outlook as his electoral fortunes slip and his popularity plummets at home and abroad, Mr. Jonathan decided to push Mr. Omokri aside. Mr. Obi Asika, who has been elevated to serve as the new presidential strategist on social media, was described as one of the co-organizers of “Social Media Week” in Lagos. “Obi Asika is a serious personality who is also refined and self-controlled,” a source at the Presidency said. Apart from his dubious activities and cantankerous personality, Mr. Omokri has committed a series of blunders in recent months that cast Mr. Jonathan’s campaign in bad light. He organized two online polls that eventually showed that President Jonathan would lose the 2015 elections to the opposition APC presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, by a wide margin. Several sources at the Presidency said Mr. Omokri’s cup became full after he engineered a poll on Twitter where informal posts showed that Mr. Jonathan’s electoral prospects had become wretched. “That ill-advised Twitter poll backfired and caused embarrassment to Mr. President,” said a source close to the Jonathan campaign. In a short email obtained by SaharaReporters earlier today, presidential spokesman Reuben Abati confirmed Mr. Asika's appointment to take charge of the president’s social media coverage. A source in the Presidency disclosed that Mr. Omokri was now in a subordinate position to Mr. Asika in the hierarchy of aides working on the president’s social media image. “If Reno decides to remain here, he will have to be reporting to Obi Asika,” a source at the Presidency revealed.

Breaking News: Boko Haram Burns Northeast Nigeria Town

Witnesses in northeastern Nigeria say Boko Haram militants have stormed a small city and burned much of it down, VOA has reported. Fleeing residents say militants first raided Askira Uba in Borno state on Sunday, torching the home of the city's top official. They say the militants returned late Monday and set fire to homes and public buildings. Able-bodied residents have fled the Borno state town in droves, leaving the sick and elderly behind. Reports say residents alerted the military, but did not receive help. Also Monday, suspected Boko Haram militants killed five soldiers during a cross-border attack in northern Cameroon. Cameroon's military said Tuesday the soldiers were killed during a "series of clashes" with the militants the day before. Officers say Boko Haram attacked a military base in the Waza region, but were driven back. The army says many of the attackers were killed. Cameroon, Niger, and Chad are helping Nigeria fight the Islamic extremist group. In response, Boko Haram has launched attacks in all three countries during the past two weeks. On Monday, representatives of the Economic Community of Central African States met in Cameroon's capital, Yaounde, and announced they are contributing $86 million to help fight the militants. On Tuesday, the commander of U.S. Special Forces Operations in Africa, James Linder, told Reuters news service that the United States will provide communications equipment and intelligence to the effort. He said the technology will allow African forces to communicate between cellphones, radios and computers. He said it will also provide a translation function that will enable French speakers and English speakers to communicate with each other by message. Boko Haram has killed thousands of Nigerians during the past five years and controls numerous towns and villages in the northeast. Regional concern grew after the extremists seized a multi-national military base last month on Lake Chad. Boko Haram has warned Nigerians not to take part in presidential and parliamentary elections set for March 28. The polls were originally scheduled for February 14 but electoral officials postponed them for six weeks, saying Boko Haram posed too big a security threat.

Again, Multiple Explosions Rock Borno a Week Into Govt's Six Weeks Time frame to Quell Boko Haram

A source who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES from Biu at exactly 1 p.m. said the blasts occurred at Yamarkumi area of Biu along Maiduguri road.
“There were three bomb explosions now in Biu at Yamarkumi along Maiduguri road. We are trying to get to the place now. It occurred just about ten minutes ago. Ambulances and security operatives are all rushing to the spot.

The Nigeria-based extremist group Boko Haram on Monday threatened neighboring countries Niger and Chad, warning the fighters were prepared to carry out suicide bombings in the countries sending troops to help fight the militants.

The warning came as leaders from Niger and other countries in the region gathered in Cameroon's capital to finalize plans for a joint offensive against the militants who have stepped up their attacks in recent weeks.

In a translation published by the SITE Intelligence Group, Boko Haram sharply criticized Niger for joining the effort and said the country was being dragged into a “swamp of darkness.” Over the last 10 days, Boko Haram fighters have repeatedly struck the town of Diffa but not the capital.

“If you insist on continuing the aggression and the coalition with the government of Chad, then we give you glad tidings that the land of Niger is easier than the land of Nigeria and moving the war to the depth of your cities will be the first reaction toward any aggression that occurs after this statement,” it said, according to SITE's transcript.

A multinational force to fight Boko Haram is expected to be formally launched in coming weeks. Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Benin initially pledged to help Nigeria. On Monday, Burundi and Central African Republic also agreed to contribute troops to fight the militant group.

The Islamic extremist group has fought a five-year insurgency against Nigeria's government, leaving 10,000 people dead last year alone.  The violence has forced some 157,000 people to seek refuge in Niger, while 40,000 others have gone to Cameroon and 17,000 are in Chad, the U.N. said. Almost 1 million Nigerians are internally displaced, according to the country's own statistics.

On Monday, leaders in Central Africa said that 10 member states had agreed to contribute most of the $100 million needed to combat Boko Haram. They did not state how much had been raised nor how much is remaining despite calling for the creation of an emergency fund to bridge the difference. (AP)

Buhari's Promise to Borno People

THE All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Monday promised to liberate captured towns in the North-East from the hold of Boko Haram insurgents.
Security operatives had hectic time controlling the unprecedented crowd that turned out to welcome Buhari to the state, which serves as the base of Boko Haram.
The state governor, Kashim Shettima, had on Sunday declared Monday a work-free day in the state and asked residents to troop out to show their love for Buhari.
Movements were paralysed, especially around the Ramat Square venue of the APC presidential rally.
At the Shehu of Borno’s palace, Buhari said, “I was here in 1975 as governor of the defunct North-East states, I’m happy that I received a befitting welcome; if elected, I will focus on tackling the persistent insecurity affecting the North-East, it is not easy as the damage has been done.
“Your Royal Highness, God willing if APC government is elected, all towns under Boko Haram control will be liberated and rebuilt. It was unfortunate that commercial activities were paralysed following the insecurity. In the past, hundreds of trailers loaded with goods took off from Maiduguri to various neighbouring countries, but presently the reverse is the situation.
“Boko Haram ideology contradicts Islamic principles, because Islam does not allow senseless killings of innocent souls. It is unfortunate that innocent persons were being killed in mosques, churches and their houses. God willing, if APC government is elected we will restore the confidence in governance.”
The Borno monarch, Alhaji Abubakar El-Kanemi, told the APC presidential candidate that, if elected, he should focus on restoration of peace, massive investment, re-construction of federal roads and ensure the success of oil exploration in the Lake Chad region.
The speeches at the rally were continually punctuated by the shouts of “Sai Buhari.”
The crowd defied attempts at maintaining order as they surged towards the podium to touch Buhari, who is seen in the state as a hero.
The surging crowd destroyed the steel barrier around the podium and damaged the television installation for the live coverage of the campaign rally thus forcing the live transmission off the air.
Those in attendance at the rally included the APC national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi; former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Audu Ogbeh; Senator Lawal Sha’aibu, Umar Farouk Aliyu, Senator Hadi Sirika, APC Secretary, Mai Mala Bunu; and a former Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Lawan Dambazau (retd.).

#Ekitighate: Court Ignores Evidence Against Fayose, Upholds Controversial Gov's Election

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has  upheld the victory of  Ayodele Fayose of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the  Ekiti state governorship election held in June 21, 2014, ThisDay Live has reported.
The appellate court upheld the judgment of the election tribunal which had earlier dismissed the petition written by the All Progressive Congress (APC) challenging Fayose's victory.
However, the appeal court made a definite pronouncement on the role of the military in an election saying that the military ought not have been deployed for the election.
The court  stated that by the provisions of the law, the military had no role to play in electoral process adding that whoever had deployed the military to Ekiti for the elections had breached the law.
In affirming the decision of the tribunal, the court  dismissed the appeal brought by  the APC.
The tribunal had on December 19, 2014 upheld Fayose's election.
Not satisfied, APC had approached the appellate court to challenge the decision of the tribunal.
In its appeal, APC  submitted that the tribunal erred when it dismissed the ground challenging the forgery of certificate by Fayose.
It also challenged the decision of the tribunal which striking out the Chief of Army Staff and the Nigerian Army as parties in the petition.
APC challenged the tribunal's decision which denied jurisdiction to pronounce whether the army has a role to play in an election or not.
In a two hour judgement delivered by a full panel of the Court of Appeal headed by Justice Abdul Aboki, the court held that the appellants did not prove beyond reasonable doubt that the certificate of the respondent issued by the Polytechnic Ibadan was forged.
The court noted that the issuing institution which was the Polytechnic Ibadan had forwaded a letter stating that the certificate in contention was issued by it.
The court further noted that the appellants failed to provide an evidence before the court to show that the certificate was forged.
It was on that premise that the court  dismissed the ground of appeal.
On the  issue of striking out the names of Chief of Army Staff and Nigerian Army‎ from the petition by the tribunal, the court held that the tribunal was right as such office and establishment were not recognised under law to be involved in electoral process.
The court noted that  the struck out parties were not necessary parties and as such their non joinder in the tribunal would not produce adverse effect on the appellant.
It also held that the military as far as the election was concerned could be categorised  as agents of INEC.
The court, nevertheless upheld the decision of the tribunal, striking out the names ‎of the Chief of Army Staff and Nigerian Army as parties in the petition.
The court also did not object to the decision of the tribunal refusing jurisdiction to determine whether the military had a role to play in an electoral process.

"We have looked carefully into this appeal, no merit in the appeal and it is hereby dismissed. The judgement of the Tribunal delivered on December 19, 2014 succeeds", the court held.
In the cross appeal, brought by PDP and Fayose on whether APC could file a petition before the tribunal without its governorship candidate, the court held in the affirmative.
Justice Aboki held that the candidate was not a necessary party in the petition on ground that it was the party that sponsored a candidate.
‎Also on whether an impeachment could qualify as a ground for disqualification in an election, the court held that there was no way an impeachment could constitute a ground for disqualification.

Crowd at General Buhari's rally in Borno
The crowd hailed Muhammadu Buhari, presidential candidate of APC, as he arrived the venue in the presence of Kashim Shettima, governor of Borno state, and other top APC members in the state, after which he made his way to the podium.
But he had hardly sat for 10 minutes when his security aides escorted him out of the venue for unknown reasons.
Angry to see him leave, the crowd went on rampage, attempting to force their way into Buhari’s convoy in a manner to prevent him from leaving.
At that point, his security aides began shooting into the air, while the crowd responded by pelting the soldiers.
Buhari’s campaign team had dithered over the choice of a date for his campaign rally in Borno due to security concerns. When Monday was eventually picked, the state governor declared a holiday, saying it wanted to afford citizens the opportunity to welcome the retired general en masse.

Again Naira Slumps, falls past 200 against dollar to new record low

The Nigerian currency continued to fall and moved past the 200-mark against the dollar as political uncertainty intensified after elections were postponed and inflation accelerated, International Business Times have reported on Monday.
Nigeria was due to vote for a new government over the weekend but the election has now been rescheduled to 28 March.
In addition, consumer price data showed the inflation rate has quickened to 8.2% in January, making the 7.9% in November a bottom. The price rise rate was up to 8% in December.
The USD/NGN rallied to 205.5 on 16 February, a new record low for the naira, adding up the losses so far this month to 7%.
Since October-end, the Nigerian unit has fallen nearly 20% against the greenback as currency devaluation by Africa's largest economy took effect in November.
Inflation is expected to accelerate further and the central bank could raise the main rate to 13.25% from 13% in the March review.
Though the north African country has managed to keep the growth rate above 6% for the past three quarters, continued Boko Haram insurgency and political instability have dampened the outlook.

Gombe: Govt Relaxes Curfew As Cameroon Hosts Meeting Against B'Haram

(Bloomberg) -- Nigeria’s northeastern Gombe state relaxed a 24-hour curfew on Monday after a series of Boko Haram attacks and bombings over the weekend, as Cameroon holds a meeting to discuss combating the expanding insurgency.
The curfew in Gombe will now run from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., said Abubakar Sule Bage, secretary to the state government. Cameroon’s capital Yaounde will host on Monday representatives from the Economic Community of Central African States to discuss battling the threat posed by Boko Haram.
“People are advised to give maximum cooperation to security agents, to restore peace to our dear state,” Bage said in an e-mailed statement. “Anyone that violates the order will be dealt with.”
Nigerian forces fought back Boko Haram Islamist militants from the city of Gombe on Saturday, while a female suicide bomber killed at least seven people and injured 32 at a bus station in the northeastern city of Damaturu on Sunday.
Boko Haram has escalated its violent six-year-old campaign to impose Islamic law in Africa’s biggest economy and largest oil-producing nation. The fighting has drawn in neighboring countries Chad, Niger and Cameroon, as the militants broadened their cross-border targets.
Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Benin and Nigeria have agreed to send about 9,000 soldiers to Nigeria. The conflict has displaced more than a million people in the region and is leading to food shortages.
Gombe was attacked earlier this month following a campaign event by President Goodluck Jonathan in the city. Days later, Nigeria’s electoral commission delayed votes scheduled for this month by six weeks after the nation’s security adviser said safety couldn’t be guaranteed amid the Boko Haram insurgency.
The Gombe assailants dropped printed statements advising residents not to vote in general elections rescheduled for next month, according to resident Yusuf Kabiru.
