Three days to the re-run elections on the inconclusive April 11
governorship and House of Assembly polls in Imo State, the state
leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday called for
outright cancellation of the entire exercise over alleged electoral
frauds.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in
the state had declared the election inconclusive and fixed April 25 for
the re-run of the poll as a result of electoral violence and
malpractices which characterised the elections.
Addressing
journalists at the PDP state headquarters, Owerri, the Chairman of the
party, Chief Nnamdi Anyaehie, alleged that there were massive frauds
orchestrated by INEC officials during the April 11 gubernatorial
elections.
Anyaehie alleged that the ward Electoral Officers,
local government Returning Officers and some INEC officials were invited
to government house on the eve of April 11 poll by the All Progressives
congress (APC’s) Governor Rochas Okorocha and offered them between N1
million to N5 million respectively to rig the elections to their favour.
He
said despite the alarm raised by the PDP, the Commission went ahead to
deploy them to various wards and LGAs to conduct the elections.
According
to him, there was selective deployment of card reader machines to PDP
stronghold while manual accreditation of voters was carried out in APC
dominated areas.
He further alleged that the results of its
members that won Imo West Senatorial zone (Orlu zone), Okigwe North
Federal Constituency and Ohaji/Egbema, Oguta and Oru West federal
constituency have been tampered by the INEC officials, stressing that
the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Gabriel Adah, assured the
party that the matter is being handled internally by the commission.
The
PDP boss claimed that the INEC’s compromised officials have continued
unabated falsifying and deducting results of PDP members that had won
their elections.
According to him, the electoral commission
deployed no customised results sheets used to write jumbo results in
favour of the APC, citing Ideato North, Ideato South, Onuimo, Mbaitoli,
Ikeduru, Orlu and Okigwe LGAs.
He therefore expressed shock that
despite the alleged electoral frauds and violence that marred Oru East,
Owerri West and Mbaitoli Houses of Assembly elections, the commission
failed to call for a re-run of elections in the affected areas.
